We’re proud to share that Culloden Academy has been awarded the Sport Scotland Gold School Sport Award for 2026–2028. This prestigious recognition highlights our commitment to putting sport at the heart of our school ethos, planning and practice. The Gold Award celebrates the excellent work across physical education, school sport and leadership, as well as our ongoing dedication to increase opportunities and engagement for all young people.

We’re especially proud that this reflects our efforts to create clear pathways for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity for our young people.

A huge thank you goes to PE staff, our Active Schools Coordinator and Young Ambassadors for completing an in-depth award application to achieve this!

Well done to all athletes that took part – the whole day was a massive success! All Sport champions & Interhouse winners will be announced at our Sport Achievement awards on Friday 26^th June. 

A special mention goes to our athletes that broke school records:

• S1 Girls Javelin – Mary Black set a new record of 27.24m

• S2 Boys High Jump – Isaac Mackenzie set a new record of 1.62m 

• S3 Girls 200m – Freya Lonnen set a new record of 27.15s

• S3 Boys 1500m – Harvey Francis set a new record of 5.15 minutes

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome Rhona Morrison  from Glasgow Caledonian University to Culloden Academy for two engaging and thought-provoking workshops on Risk Management.

Our Higher Business Studies students explored how businesses identify and manage risk, with discussions ranging from the impact of social media and celebrity endorsements to the consequences of getting things wrong in the public eye.

It was fantastic to see the students sharing their ideas, asking insightful questions, and applying their learning to real-world business scenarios.

A huge thank you to Rhona for delivering such an interactive and relevant session and helping our young people gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing businesses today.

To accompany our unit on the First World War, our S3 historians visited Poppy Scotland’s travelling ‘Bud’ museum which discusses the work of Poppy Scotland and the importance of remembrance after the First World War. Pupils ‘clocked into’ the travelling poppy factory, and made their own poppies, as a souvenir of the bus’s visit.

With the World Cup starting today, we have decided to create an interdisciplinary learning experience for the pupils to encourage them to celebrate the cultures from all of the countries taking part and, of course, to cheer on Scotland. The S2 – S5 tutor groups have been each been allocated a country and on the day their team plays matches, can wear the colours of their countries flag. We are also asking them to learn a few words of their country’s language, for example hello, goodbye, please and thank you. This will be easier for some tutor groups than others! There will be prizes after the group stages for the team which scored the most goals, the team which had the most goals scored against them and also the team with the most red/yellow cards. Next term, there will be a prize for the tutor group with the winning team. On Scotland match days, the whole school can dress in Scottish colours to support our National team.

The list of dates below shows the tutor classes involved for all the different matches. We’re hoping that this way our pupils can learn from as well as enjoy what is sure to be a great sporting competition. We’re also hoping that it won’t be 28 years until we can celebrate Scotland being in the world cup again.

Seven pupils from Culloden Academy represented Highland to compete in throwing, jumping and running events.   Medals are awarded to the top scoring athletes in each group.  The Culloden Academy athletes gave it their all against tough competition.  Special mention to the medal winners: Alexander Robertson – silver, Kenzie Bolt – bronze, Amy Kennedy – bronze and congratulations to all for their effort, sportsmanship and conduct.

The sun was shining on Friday and we had a wonderful time trekking with the alpacas along the shore of Loch Ness. A massive thank you to Loch Ness Alpacas for accommodating us again this year.

The Battlefield Trip has been a great success. The pupils have been a real asset to the school, showing respect when appropriate while also being full of fun and enthusiasm. The staff are very proud of the pupils and hope they have gained a great deal from the experience.

On Tuesday, our S3 Girls Do STEM group enjoyed an inspiring visit to the beautiful Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Highland Wildlife Park!

Following on from her visit to Culloden Academy last week, L&D Officer, Iona, gave us a fantastic tour through the drive-through reserve before hosting an insightful Q&A session with six incredible women from across the park. Each shared their own journey into conservation and highlighted the vital role women play within STEM industries, including zoology and wildlife conservation.

A huge thank you to RZSS for making us feel so welcome and for giving our pupils such an inspiring experience.

This trip also marked the end of our 2025/2026 Girls Do STEM programme. Throughout the year, our pupils have had the opportunity to learn from an amazing range of organisations, including Highlands and Islands Airways Ltd, Morrison Construction, SSEN, West Fraser, NHS Highland, Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery, RESILIENCE Medicine, and finally the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. Learning about the importance of women in STEM has hopefully shown our fabulous S3 girls that they truly can be anything they want to be…. with passion, determination, and hard work.
